Do you remember when we talked about the evolution of the electric cello? We discussed the emergence of electronic instruments and the technological advances from the early to mid-20th century. Today, I’d like to introduce a special upcoming performance in Taipei — 'Boulez 100 in Taipei'. The concert commemorates Pierre Louis Joseph Boulez (1925–2016), one of the most important figures of that era.

The electric cello is a modern instrument that emerged in the 20th century. Compared with the traditional acoustic cello, it offers greater tonal flexibility, allowing musicians to fine-tune the sound to fit various musical styles and even add diverse effects. Thanks to electronic technology, it can mimic the timbres of different instruments, opening up endless possibilities for musical creativity.

It’s much more than that. The electric cello is an instrument that emerged in the 20th century, bringing with it innovation and endless possibilities. Because it’s built differently from the traditional cello, it also produces a distinct sound. Today, I’ll give you a brief introduction to this fascinating instrument.

It was my first time performing as a soloist at Singapore’s iconic Victoria Concert Hall, and the theme made it even more special — the timeless classics of Anita Mui.
