"Night Jasmine" was a popular song throughout China in the 1940s, with lyrics and music by Li Jingguang. After completing the song, Li Jingguang offered it to then-famous singers including Zhou Xuan, Gong Qiuxia, and Yao Li for auditions. However, they all rejected the song due to its broad vocal range. It wasn't until the newly emerged Japanese singer Li Xianglan (Yamaguchi Yoshiko) discovered the song that she was captivated and volunteered to perform it. Li Xianglan's ethereal, tender, and elegant voice finally made "Night Jasmine" a national hit.
